The Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell presents the best draw of recent years
Rafael Nadal, Grigor Dimitrov, Dominic Thiem, David Goffin, Kevin Anderson and also three other players like Diego Schwartzman, Pablo Carreño and Roberto Bautista who are among the 20 best in the world ranking will be the main attractions of this year’s Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell. The news was presented today at noon at the Saló de Cent of the Barcelona Town Hall. In total there will be 12 players among the top 26 of the ATP list and, in addition, nine Spanish tennis players among the top-100 have also entered.
“We are very happy with the list. We have five fantastic players, but also tennis players beloved in Barcelona as Kei Nishikori as well as all the best in Spanish tennis. And also some of the great promises of this sport like the Russian Andrey Rublev, who heads this year the classification of the Next Gen“, explained Albert Costa, tournament director at the presentation. Costa will also celebrate his tenth anniversary in this role of the organization.
The mayor of Barcelona Ada Colau hosted the presentation. The president of Banc Sabadell, Josep Oliu, the Count of Godó and the president of the Real Club Tenis Barcelona, Albert Agustí, also attended, who qualified the entry list of this 66th edition of the tournament “exceptional, and surely one of the best in the last years.”
Agustí also talked about the novelties of the tournament, which include the celebration of a video game tournament (eSPORTS) that will begin on March 24, the tribute that will be paid to Toni Nadal, who for the first time will not accompany his nephew as coach in Barcelona, and the day of remembrance of the terrorist attack on August 17 on the Ramblas, which explained that they have considered that this year it should “transform the photo opportunity that is done each year with several players in different locations of the city in an act in the Ramblas that serves as recognition to the victims of the attack of the past year .”
Colau thanked this gesture and in her parliament referred to Barcelona as “the world capital of tennis during the week of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell.” The mayor highlighted the fact that the tournament is organized by a club, the Real Club Tenis Barcelona: “It is a pride that this tournament exists, which comes from the making of the city itself and we thank the club for all the effort it makes in their organization.”
“Barcelona loves sport and in the 73 neighborhoods of the city it is practiced daily. Sport is still one of the most powerful tools when we talk about transmitting values and make city,” Colau added
Oliu said that he is very satisfied with the 11 years of sponsorship of the bank and has referred to values such as tenacity or knowing how to overcome failure that coincide in the DNA of Banc Sabadell, in tennis and in Nadal.
The tournament will be held from April 21 to 29. The construction work for the tournament will begin next March 21st.
