The number 1 court of the RCTB-1899 will bear the name of Manuel Santana during the 68th edition of the tournament
The organization of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell has decided to maintain the tribute of court 1 of the Real Club Tenis Barcelona-1899, which will be named after Manuel Santana, the champion of the 1970 edition, who was to be recognized in 2020 in the 50th anniversary of his victory. Therefore, it has been decided to maintain a deserved recognition during the celebration of this year’s tournament.
Court 1, located next to the RCTB-1899 clubhouse, is the second in importance, hosting many main draw singles matches of the tournament until Thursday, which will take place from April 17 to 25.
Santana is one of the 13 tennis players who throughout history have won the title of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell on more than one occasion: Rafa Nadal, 11 victories; Orantes, Mats Wilander and Roy Emerson three, and those who have lifted the Conde de Godó Trophy twice include Herbert Flam, Martin Mulligan, Ilie Nastase, Bjorn Borg, Ivan Lendl, Kent Carlsson, Andrés Gómez and Thomas Muster, in addition to Santana (1962 and 1970).
In 2021 the two main courts of the tournament will bear the names of the two most important tennis players in the history of Spanish tennis, Rafa Nadal and Manuel Santana.
In the 2021 edition, the tribute to the 50th anniversary of this victory corresponds to Manuel Orantes, another of the great figures of Spanish tennis. His victory in 1971 against American Bob Lutz was a master class in tennis. Orantes won in Barcelona three times and, actually, in the 2019 edition he was already honoured for the 50th anniversary of his first win and Court number 1 of the RCTB-1899 was named after him.
