Bernabé Zapata and Carlos Gimeno, one step closer from the Main Draw

There are already ten players from the ‘Spanish Armada’ in the main draw of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell … and there could be two more. Carlos Gimeno and Bernabé Zapata won today their respective first qualifying matches and, if they earn a second victory tomorrow, they will win their passes for the main draw.

Bernabé Zapata was the star of one of the great comebacks of the day. After losing the first set to Tennys Sandgren, the Valencian tennis player was able to turn the match around. Despite the difference in the ranking (the North American is currently the 59th best player in the world and Zapata is 146th), the Valencian never lost hope and tomorrow he will fight to make his debut in the main draw.

For his part, Gimeno advanced to the last round of qualifying after defeating someone well known on the courts of the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona such as Mikhail Kukushkin. The Kazakh tennis player has played the tournament eleven times, but this time he could not go further bowing to the young Valencian. Gimeno was a finalist at the Wimbledon junior event and this season he won the challenger Gran Canaria 2. Tomorrow his rival will be the Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, his last obstacle before a main draw debut of an ATP 500 such as the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell.

The Hindu Sumit Nagal also made a comeback to advance to the last round. Rune –wildcard granted by the organization-, Ivashka, Kuznetsov or Cachin also achieved victories. In any case, all the players, winners and losers, have put on a great show on what was the opening day of the tournament. A day of highly contested matches, which in some cases almost reached the two hour mark.
