Rafa Nadal will play in the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell 2022

The Majorcan, current champion of the tournament, will seek his 13th title in the RCTB-1899

David Ferrer: “What Nadal is doing is something unique that will go down in history and it’s very exciting to be able to witness it”

Rafa Nadal, who has signed the best start of the season ever with 15 victories (no defeats) and his 21st Grand Slam, has confirmed his participation in the next Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell – Trofeo Conde de Godó, which this 2022 reaches its 69th edition. The Majorcan tennis player is in top form and is facing this year’s clay court tour with great optimism to achieve great things. He is currently ranked fourth in the ATP rankings and remains the leading benchmark on clay, as evidenced by his 13 titles at Roland Garros or the 12th title in Barcelona and Monte Carlo. Therefore, Nadal remains faithful to the tournament of the Real Club de Tenis Barcelona-1899, an entity to which he has belonged since he was a child, in which he will participate for the seventeenth time and in which the center court bears his name. “Playing in my club and in front of my people means a lot to me,” said the Majorcan.

Rafa Nadal will arrive in Barcelona as the tennis player with the greatest number of Grand Slam titles in history at 21, after winning the Australian Open in January in an epic five set final against the current world number one Daniil Medvedev. The player from Manacor is the main figure in the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell line-up, which in the coming weeks will continue to outline the presence of other big tennis stars such as Stefanos Tsitsipas, finalist of last year’s edition who has also confirmed his participation.

David Ferrer, the tournament’s sports director, is thrilled with the participation of his friend and former rival. “Having Rafa in Barcelona is very exciting for the tournament and the expectation will be high to know how far he can go,” he says. “What Nadal is doing is something unique that will go down in history and it is very exciting to be able to witness it,” he said thrilled. “Rafa is a legend in this sport, and we should enjoy it as long as we can,” he said.

The Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell is synonymous with tradition, spectacle, and the best tennis. During its 69 years of history, the best rackets in the world have passed through its courts and the tradition of the club like the RCTB-1899 has allowed to discover young talents who have become fabulous tennis players. In recent years, the tournament has served to discover players like Medvedev or Tsitsipas, who starred in the last finals played (2018, 2019 and 2021).
