Day 1: Nicolás Jarry and Marcel Granollers, second encounter in 24 hours
A total of 10 singles matches are part of the program of the first big day of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell 2019. If the qualifying draw raised the interest in clay court tennis at a level rarely seen, now with the arrival of the first round of the tournament the show without a doubt will be even bigger for the fans.
On the Rafa Nadal court the action will start with the clash between Marton Fucsovics and Denis Kudla, later a Pedro Sousa vs Jaume Munar and scheduled third will be the match of the day, the duel between Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano López, the eleventh time they square off, for now tied 5-5.
On that same court, the fourth match of the day the Argentine Diego Schwartzman will be in action, fresh out of the qualifying despite being ranked number (25). The Buenos Aires tennis player, with two ATP titles to his name, will debut against Yoshihito Nishioka, one of the three Japanese tennis players in competition.
The duel between Nicolás Jarry and Marcel Granollers is more than just a first round match. The two met yesterday on the Rafa Nadal court and in less than 24 hours they meet again on the Manuel Orantes court, quite a rarity. Yesterday the Catalan won in three sets saving a difficult situation in the second, when the Chilean served 5-4 in his favour to save the situation. The match had no precedent since they had never met before and now they face each other again for the second time in 24 hours.
The meeting between Leonardo Mayer and Marius Copil will be Nadal´s first opponent of Nadal, and lovers of power tennis will enjoy an electric duel that will undoubtedly be the Reilly Opelka vs. Taylor Fritz clash. Two future US tennis stars will face to face and all the eyes will be on the tennis player with the highest average number of aces per game (19.7) of the circuit, the 2.11 metres Opelka giant.
