The economic impact of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell 2017 exceeded 45 million euros
The economic impact of the 65th Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell has been estimated at 45.1 million euros. The tournament, which took place in the last week of April, recorded a total attendance of 95,698 spectators. The impact study has been carried out by the Institut DEP, a company with extensive experience in the sector that has carried out similar analysis in the main sporting events held in recent years in Catalonia.
The assessment takes into account the direct expenditure made by fans who come to the facility, as well as the indirect impact the tournament has on the city. The latter is calculated by analyzing businesses who supply the goods and services needed to make the tournament, the impact on GVA (gross added value), the expense for the consumption of goods and services by workers in sectors that directly or indirectly benefit.
DEP´s study was conducted on site at the Real Club Tennis Barcelona (April 24 to 29) and online (May 2-14). The direct cost has amounted to 17,191,542 euros, the indirect economic impact was 8,372,377 euros and the impact on the GVA, 13,489,623 euros. The sum of the three concepts, in addition to the tournament's own expenses, makes the total economic impact of the event 45,153,542 euros.
This impact is felt in economic activities that affect tourism, trade, jobs, industry / innovation, organization and politics / administration.
The value of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell is not measured exclusively by the economic side. The social impact is, if possible, more important and is something that the tournament is keen to take advantage of in creating awareness and a legacy. The tournament has used this to impact not just the world of sports, but also the environment. In fact, the 2017 edition has become a reference as a model of sports organization in Spain and was awarded a certificate as an environmentally sustainable tournament by the auditor Veritas Bureau.
It is also necessary to highlight the strong media impact that the tournament has registered on this occasion, which for the first time in its history has had television cameras in all the singles matches that have been played. The images of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell have reached a total of 179 countries with a global audience of 33.5 million viewers, representing an increase of 11.9% compared to the 2016 edition.
