The Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell 2020 promises great emotions. So far, five of the most outstanding players in the world rankings and with great prominence in recent weeks have confirmed their participation in the 68th edition of one of the tournaments with the biggest tradition in the circuit. Rafael Nadal, world number 1, Daniil Medvedev, number 4, Dominic Thiem, number 5, Stefanos Tsitsipas, number 6, and Roberto Bautista, number 9, will be the main stars of the competition, which will be played between 18 and 26 of April.
Nadal, leader of the ATP ranking, will be seeking his 12th title on the courts of the Real Club Tenis Barcelona-1899 (RCTB). His form has been magnificent and in two months he has helped Spain to win the Davis Cup and also to reach the final of the ATP Cup, tournament in which he has only lost two matches, both in Australia, to David Goffin in the quarterfinals and to Novak Djokovic in the final.
The sensation of last summer for reaching six consecutive finals, the Russian Medvedev, will repeat in Barcelona in search of the title that slipped away in 2019, when he was defeated in the final by Thiem, who will be the defender of the title. Both appear as the two main players of the group that are chasing the three ATP giants, Nadal, Djokovic and Roger Federer in the ranking. Thiem will play the semi-finals tomorrow of the Australian Open in search of a spot for the final of the first major of the year.
And next to them we have Stefanos Tsitsipas, the current winner of the Nitto ATP finals in London, who in 2018, when the Barcelona fans discovered him, reached the final of the RCTB-1899 tournament.
Bautista, undefeated in the ATP Cup without losing a single set, will return to the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell after his absence last year. It will be his seventh participation. His best showings to date are quarterfinals in 2015 and 2018.
David Ferrer, sports director of the tournament, shows his satisfaction with the management so far: “The arrival of Tsitsipas means that four of the six best players in the world will compete at our tournament,” he said. It is something that very few tournaments in the calendar can achieve. Nadal is an asset of ours and as number 1 of the ranking his participation is the greatest incentive. But next to him will be the three that appear as the greatest threats to the big three, Medvedev, Thiem, who will defend the title, and Tsitsipas. And, of course, we also have Bautista, player of the club that is already consolidated in the top-10.”
The final list of participants will be announced on March 10.
