The Next Gen of Barcelona amazes in Miami and four of them are already in the fourth round
The Next Gen of Barcelona continues to surprise at the Miami Open this week and four of the players participating in the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, all of them under 21, have already qualified for the fourth round, the round of 16. Stefanos Tsitsipas, Denis Shapovalov, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Frances Tiafoe are among the last 16 of the second Masters 1,000 of the season, which guarantees an important step forward in their respective rankings.
After Canadian Auger advancing to this round on Sunday, the youngest of all, we must add last night´s victory of Tsitsipas, who defeated Leonardo Mayer in two sets, Shapovalov’s, who has controlled Andrey Rublev’s momentum in a match of hitters, also in two sets, and Tiafoe, who has been able to end to the superb run of David Ferrer, who took the first set (7-5), but then fell (3-6) , (3-6).
This group performance of these four great promises (the fifth, Alex de Miñaur, has not participated in Miami) demonstrates the imminent change of hierarchy that is about to occur in the tennis world. All of them are ready to lead a thriving and ambitious generation that wants to dominate the ATP ranking and in the coming days, and certainly also in Barcelona, will have the chance to prove it.
For a chance to advance to the quarterfinals, Tsitsipas will face Shapovalov in a duel that will possibly be repeated many times over the next few years. At the moment they have faced each other twice, both in 2018, and each one has won one of those matches. Tiafoe will take on David Goffin (0-3 in favour of the Belgian in their clashes) and Auger will play Nikoloz Basilashvili for the first time.
Tennis lives expectantly in light of the results of these young people so prepared that they have reached the elite to stay. Seeing all of them together, and also Reilly Opelka, Taylor Fritz, Casper Ruud, Jaume Munar and many other players who have not yet turned 22, will be the great gift of Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell this year to the Barcelona fans.
