Rafael Nadal, first tennis player confirmed for the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell 2019
Rafael Nadal is the first star confirmed for the next edition of the 67th Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, which will be held from April 20 to 28 next year. The reigning champion will participate for the fifteenth time in the Real Club Tenis Barcelona tournament with the possibility of reaching a dozen titles on the court that bears his name.
Nadal, who has already finished his holiday and is about to start training in Manacor for the 2019 season, will once again be the front line of the tournament's poster, which in the coming weeks will outline the participation of its main stars.
"Once again I would like to announce my participation in the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell. This will be a special year for me given that it is my fifteenth participation. See you in Barcelona in April, "said Nadal, who, as always, has placed the tournament of Real Club Tenis Barcelona, his own club, in a place of privilege in his 2019 calendar.
Despite not having taken part in the Nitto ATP finals in London and not finishing the year as number 1 in the world ranking after being forced to retire in tournaments as big as the Australian Open (quarterfinals against Marin Cilic) and the US Open (semifinals against Juan Martín del Potro, his last match of 2018), Nadal has remained the best player in the circuit in several aspects: he has been the tennis player with more ATP titles (five) and with the most outstanding win/loss record (45-4).
"The fact that Rafa comes to Barcelona is great news even if it seems normal to the fans," explains Albert Costa, tournament director. And it will be his 15th participation since he debuted in 2003. He is at home in his club and appreciates all our work in the tournament. And, of course, for the organization it is a pride to be able to count on once again with the best tennis player in history on clay. Surely nobody will want to miss it. "
Costa expects to have four or five players from the top-10 and recalls that in the last edition, "the best that was held", alongside Nadal we had no less than Novak Djokovic, Dominc Thiem, David Goffin, Kei Nishikori, Grigor Dimitrov and the vast majority of Spanish rackets.
The Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell is one of the most outstanding tournaments in the ATP 500 category, which has 13 events on several continents. In 2018 it distributed 2.5 million euros in prize money to the participants. A total of 101,467 fans attended the seven days of competition, an absolute record in the history of the tournament.
Tickets for the next edition are now on sale and can be purchased through the official website of the tournament: www.barcelonaopenbancsabadell.com
