Leader of the emerging Russian tennis that has valuable players like Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev or Evgeny Donskoy, Karen Khachanov has taken a place in the elite ATP in two extraordinary seasons that have led him to the 11th place in the world ranking. At 22 years of age, the Moscow talent residing in Barcelona and belonging to Real Club Tenis Barcelona has proven his talent and can be presented as one of the aspirants to conquer the most appreciated titles in Barcelona in the immediate future.
Directed at the start of his career by Spanish coach Galo Blanco, it was not until reinforcing his relation with Vedran Martic, at the end of 2017, when Khachanov began to excel. To the title he won in the previous campaign (Chengdu) in 2018 he added: Marseille, Moscow and Paris-Bercy, being the one the most prominent as it was the last Masters 1,000 of the season. To lift the trophy he had to defeat no less than four top-10: John Isner, Alexander Zverev, Dominc Thiem and Novak Djokovic, who had 21 games winning streak, in the final.
From the 45th position in which he concluded the year 2017 he moved to 11 thanks to a season full of victories in which he won 46 matches and lost 22.
"Djan", as his teammates call him in the circuit, started playing tennis very young. He will always remember that at 16 he played and exhibition match against Marat Safin in Helsinki. Since then Safin, who was number 1 in the world in 2000, became one of his great idols next to Juan Martín del Potro.
Despite his youth, Khachanov is married since 2016 to Veronika Shkliaeva.
